Frequently Asked Questions

Questions before you reach out? Start here.

Starting counseling — especially for the first time — comes with a lot of unknowns. Here are honest answers to the questions clients ask most.

Do I need a referral or diagnosis to start counseling?

No referral is required. Reach out, share what's going on in your own words, and a clinical assessment during your first session will help clarify what's happening and what a treatment plan could look like — together.

What happens during my first session?

The first session is mostly about getting to know you: your history, what brought you here, and what you're hoping will be different. Just as important, it's the start of building a relationship where you can genuinely be yourself — without judgment, without a mask, and without having to explain or defend who you are. That kind of trust doesn't happen overnight, but it starts here. From there, a treatment plan is built around your specific goals, not a template applied the same way to every client.

How does telehealth counseling actually work?

Sessions happen over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You'll receive a private link ahead of your appointment — all that's needed is a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera, a stable internet connection, and a quiet, private space to talk.

Is telehealth counseling really as effective as meeting in person?

Yes. Research consistently shows telehealth counseling produces outcomes comparable to in-person sessions for most mental health and addiction concerns. The same clinical assessment, treatment planning, and quality of care apply whether a session happens over video or in an office — and sessions are never recorded.

What if I've never been to therapy before?

That's completely normal, and most first-time clients feel a little unsure of what to expect. There's no right way to begin — no dress code, no script to follow, and no expectation that you'll have the answers before you log on.

Do you accept insurance?

Insurance credentialing is actively underway, including with Medicaid and Medicare, to help keep care accessible for individuals and families of all economic backgrounds — so private pay (cash pay) is currently being accepted in the meantime. If you're not sure what your plan covers for telehealth counseling, you're welcome to call your insurance provider directly, or reach out here and we'll help however we can.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. As a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Addiction Counselor, medication isn't prescribed here. If medication support looks like it could help alongside counseling, that's something to talk through together, including coordination with a prescribing provider.

Is what I share in session confidential?

Yes, always. Everything shared in session, by phone, or by email is protected under HIPAA and Louisiana confidentiality law. Nothing is shared without written consent, except in the limited situations the law requires.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Cancellation and rescheduling details are covered clearly during intake, so there are no surprises later. Life happens — reaching out as early as possible is always appreciated and never held against you.

Will in-person sessions ever be available?

Not yet — sessions are telehealth-only for now — but in-person appointments are planned for the future as the practice grows and an office becomes available.

What are your scheduling hours?

Messages and appointment requests can come in anytime, but scheduling is handled Monday–Thursday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, and Friday, 9:00 AM–2:00 PM. Anything received outside those hours gets a response the next business day.

Will you connect with me on social media?

No — friend, follow, or connection requests from current or former clients aren't accepted on personal social media, and confidentiality is never confirmed or denied publicly, even in response to a review. This protects your privacy no matter what you choose to post. Full details are in the Payment Policy · Privacy Policy.

Still Have Questions?

Ask anything — there's no wrong question.

If something isn't covered here, reach out directly. Every question is a normal part of deciding whether counseling is the right next step.
